Vacuum aspiration of subcutaneous fat tissue (liposuction)

Vacuum aspiration of subcutaneous fat tissue or liposuction is used as one of the stages in the comprehensive treatment of lymphedema.

Lymph consists of water, proteins and tissue growth factors. The longer the swelling persists, the more fat and connective tissue accumulates in the affected limb. Firstly, it causes the difference in limb circumference that never goes away with compression garments or massage. Secondly, this tissue becomes a fruitful environment for microorganisms, leading to erysipelas, which, once it occurs, becomes a recurrent issue for patients with lymphedema. Thirdly, fat tissue produces lymph, leading to more lymph production, increased burden on the lymphatic system, and increased swelling.

The therapeutic essence of liposuction for lymphedema patients is the removal of excessive fat tissue and edematous fluid from the subcutaneous segment of the affected limb. It doesn’t solve the problem of lymphedema but facilitates lymph drainage and helps achieve symmetrical limb appearance.
