Lymphovenous anastomosis, also called lymphovenular anastomosis or LVA, is an effective and minimally invasive surgical technique for treating lymphedema.
In some cases, it allows for a 100% reduction in swelling, meaning we can achieve a complete cure for the patient.
LVAs are effective only in patients with early-stage lymphedema, where healthy lymphatic vessels are visible on fluorescent lymphography. The lymphatic system gradually deteriorates. After the removal of lymph nodes, the lymphatic vessels continue to function for some time. However, as the pressure on these vessels increases, their walls thin and eventually deteriorate. The vessels typically deteriorate at their thinnest points, usually the forearm, hand, or shoulder. Therefore, it is crucial to establish new lymphatic pathways using the functioning vessels in the unaffected limb before they are destroyed.
It is important to understand that performing anastomoses without preoperative mapping significantly reduces the likelihood of a successful operation.
No hospital stay needed
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and lasts only 2 hours
Incision on the skin
is only 2 cm
The result is immediately visible on the operating table
Effective in 9 out of 10 patients with early-stage lymphedema
Swelling reduction ranges
from 70% to 100%
After the rehabilitation period, the vast majority of patients stop wearing compression garments.
After the surgery, no dressings or stitch removal are required, and the patient experiences no pain or physical discomfort.
Although LVA is minimally invasive for the patient, suturing a lymphatic vessel and a vein is technically a highly complex procedure. Only 0.01% of surgeons possess the skills required for supermicrosurgery. That’s why choosing an experienced specialist is crucial for success.
Our team performs over 300 such operations annually, a surgical expertise unmatched by any specialist in Russia and the CIS countries.
