Breast Implant Illness (BII) is a variety of painful conditions that occur in patients after the placement of silicone implants. First symptoms may occur immediately after the implantation or may present several years after the surgery.

The exact causes of BII are not known, but some factors may contribute:

— Autoimmune and/or inflammatory response to the synthetic material;

— Bacterial contamination of the implant surface;

— Response to surgical intervention.

BII manifests with more than 50 different symptoms.

BII can be treated by removing the implants and the capsule. In some cases, surgery for breast reconstruction may be required. Most symptoms related to BII resolve immediately after the removal of the synthetic materials. The remaining symptoms typically resolve within 30 days after the surgery. Currently, there are no technologies that can predict the potential occurrence of BII in individual patients.
